San Francisco, October
1, 2001-Kyle Harrison and John Lusk began Platinum Concepts,
Inc. in 1999 to manufacture and market MouseDriver,
a novelty computer mouse shaped as the head of a driver golf
club. Their adventures with starting a company in the golf
industry have led to a new book, The
MouseDriver Chronicles: The True-Life Adventures of Two First-Time
Entrepreneurs (Perseus Publishing, January
2002).
The book initially began as a diary that
the founders kept to record the realities and emotions of
their everyday life as entrepreneurs. With requests to share
their entries from business school classmates and other golf
industry entrepreneurs, the founders created The MouseDriver
Insider, a periodic newsletter that is sent to over 500 subscribers.
Out of this e-newsletter grew The MouseDriver Chronicles,
which takes us on a roller-coaster ride through the life of
a golf product-from design and production, to packaging, to
marketing, PR, sales and distribution, and customer service.
We accompany John and Kyle to meetings and trade shows, including
the giant PGA show in Orlando, where their MouseDriver product
was first introduced in 2000.
Perseus Publishing, along with a number
of other major publishing houses, became interested in Harrison
and Lusk after they appeared as the cover story of the February,
2001 issue of Inc. magazine. The piece, "An American Start-Up,"
highlights the founders' entrepreneurial highs and lows, their
passion for creating something new, and their amazing resolve
to share their experience with others. Previously, MouseDriver
had been mentioned in over fifty publications, including numerous
golf magazines.
According to Lusk, "As Wharton graduates,
we had great opportunities to enter the financial, consulting,
and dotcom industries. But we wanted to do something on our
own. And while bootstrapping a single-product company is extremely
difficult and humbling, it's also tremendously gratifying."
He added, "Our business education and experience, combined
with incredible support from the golf industry, especially
with regard to marketing and public relations, has helped
us to create a successful company."
An intimate, insightful, and often hilarious
look into the world of golf retail and the minds of two young
entrepreneurs who brought a simple idea to market, The MouseDriver
Chronicles is for anyone who has ever had a dream that flies
in the face of conventional wisdom.
